The Big Universe - thought experiment

Thought Experiment - Big Universe

With so much in doubt about the story of our universe I ask you to use this tried and tested technique to look at some alternative solutions. So what is in doubt?

  1. We don’t know what makes up 95% of the observable universe.

  • Dark Energy - 70%

  • Dark Matter - 25%.

2. How did the universe start?

The Big Bang theory is well accepted, but where did all that stuff come from?

3. How will the universe end?

Big Rip - Big Crunch - Cold death?

4. Why are GR and Quantum Theory incompatible?

No quantum theory of gravity.

I could go on.

So what is the thought game which may address these?

It’s very simple. It only requires one assumption:-

The universe has always been much bigger than we thought.

What if - what if the universe really is both infinite and full of stuff.

What if our observable universe is only a tiny part of a much bigger and older cosmos?

You don’t want to play? I hear you say “waste of time, it’s untestable. What’s the point?”

Hold on!

Not only is it testable. It’s also falsifiable.

Falsifiable? If the Hubble parameter is constant then there is nothing out there. If there was then its gravitational would cause an acceleration on Ho.

Testable? There would be gravitational waves produced by all that stuff. Not detectable by LIGO so we may have to wait a bit.

So have a go. What have you got to lose? It could make things a whole lot simpler.

THOUGHT EXPERIMENT

What if - what if the universe really is both infinite and full of stuff.

What if our observable universe is only a tiny part of a much bigger and older cosmos?

I hope you give it a go. Could be a coffee break game or even a lateral thinking challenge for undergrads. The results may surprise you.

A simple solution to some of those big questions? No new physics required!

The first part of my answer is here, but don’t cheat, have a go ;).
